The Art & Science of Kidney Retrieval from a Deceased Donor

Welcome to The Art & Science of Kidney Retrieval from a Deceased Donor, a dedicated workshop aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge required for deceased donor kidney retrieval. As the Program Director, Consultant Urologist, and Head of the Urology Department at Hospital Selayang, I have initiated this program to strengthen Malaysia’s organ procurement efforts and improve kidney transplant outcomes.

This workshop provides a comprehensive learning experience through expert-led discussions and surgical video demonstrations. We are honored to have this program officially inaugurated by YBhg Dato’ Dr Mohd Azman bin Yacob, Director of the Medical Development Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia, whose leadership continues to drive advancements in organ donation and transplantation in our country.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Astellas for their generous sponsorship of Chapter 1 & Chapter 2, which has made this initiative possible.

Chapter 1: Mastering Deceased Donor Kidney Procurement

This session focuses on the technical precision and surgical expertise necessary for successful kidney retrieval. It covers anatomical considerations, organ cooling and perfusion, vascular challenges, and best practices in procurement techniques. The goal is to ensure that every kidney retrieved is preserved at the highest standard for successful transplantation.

Chapter 2: Bridging the Gap – The Essential Role of Paramedics and Coordinators in Kidney Procurement

This session highlighted the crucial role of paramedics and coordinators in the kidney procurement process, ensuring seamless organ retrieval, preservation, and transport. It brought together passionate healthcare professionals from across Malaysia — all sharing one goal: to strengthen the national kidney procurement network through knowledge, skill, and teamwork.

Under my guidance, with the help of the trained Selayang paramedics, participants were trained in the key aspects of kidney procurement, including:
• Surgical Equipment Preparation
• Perfusion Equipment Setup
• Organ Perfusion (Intra-op)
• Split and Bench Table Setup
• Packing and Transport

This initiative aims to empower hospitals to develop their own trained paramedics, reduce dependency on central teams from Selayang and Kuala Lumpur, and ensure timely, standardized kidney procurement practices nationwide.

This workshop would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the entire Selayang team, whose commitment ensured the success of this event. I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our distinguished faculty members, who generously shared their expertise and invaluable experience in this field.

In collaboration with: Malaysian Urological Association (MUA) & Astellas

Together, we are bridging the gap — building capacity, strengthening teamwork, and saving more lives through transplantation.
💚 Together, we make kidney procurement safer, faster, and better.
